Agents of Good are fierce and uncompromising donor champions. Bringing both rigour and creativity to every project, they challenge their clients to question organizational assumptions that compromise not only #donorlove, but also donor respect. They have helped us to give donors a stronger voice in our organization, to revitalize our culture of philanthropy through storytelling, and in the process they have challenged me to become a better fundraiser.
I had the pleasure of working with John and the team at Agents of Good on our annual year-end appeal. The guidance and advice we received was invaluable and will improve all our future donor communications, not just this one appeal. John pushed us out of our comfort zone and challenged us to bring not just our appeal but also our relationship with our donors to the next level. He was patient, informative, and enthusiastic to see us succeed. If even half of the care and kindheartedness John showed to us and our appeal makes it to our donors, they are going to be overwhelmed with feelings of affection.
I first heard about the Agents of Good during a webinar where I listened to John critique a direct mail pack. I remember thinking that it would be pretty intimidating to be on the receiving end of John’s brutally honest DM commentary. Turns out, getting that kind of feedback is a game-changer. The Agents cut through clutter, jargon and ego to help create authentic and meaningful communications designed to make donors feel awesome about giving. (The fact that donorlove boosts donor retention and revenue almost feels like a fringe benefit.) They were flexible in finding a way to work with us that fit our budget and needs. The Agents are generous with their expertise which helps create better communications and better fundraisers. It’s a real treat to work with them.

John and Jen dig deep to understand an organizations DNA; take no prisoners in pushing the lines of traditional direct-mail; don’t get wrapped up in internal politics in order to challenge leaders and organizations to be truly donor-centred. AOG is a true partner in our development program helping Food Banks Canada connect more meaningfully with their donors and helping our donors understand the impact of their giving.
Working with Agents of Good isn’t about simply handing off a project and being handed back a campaign that doesn’t really speak your organization’s language. Working with Jen Love and John Lepp is about becoming part of their agency and them becoming part of your team – it’s collaborative, there’s room for discussion and everyone brings their expertise to the table to come up with finding unique solutions that put your donors at the centre of your fundraising campaigns. In our case, our 2012 and 2013 annual fund campaigns weren’t about being ‘bleeding edge’ in terms of using the latest digital fundraising technology or design, but rather about starting with the basic elements that were already working for our donors and executing them in a way that was fresh and more effective than they had been in the past.
We came to Agents of Good with a blank slate looking for a logo, website and business cards. The team really delivered. We loved the logo almost immediately. I still look at our branding pieces as one of the best investments we made into our little start-up. Extending the branding to our other marketing pieces was equally pleasing. They really captured what we were looking for in our website, and even made a mobile specific version which I love as much as the main site. The entire team at AOG really cares about what they do. They’re not afraid to offer a contrarian view, yet are a pleasure to work with.
I’ve not met John so my recommendation is limited to three key qualities I can easily see as a ‘remote’ client. First, John is an enthusiast; he has a seemingly endless appetite for what he does. Second, he’s knowledgeable; he knows what he’s doing and what he talks about and isn’t afraid to challenge accepted wisdom. Third, he’s creative; he ‘gets it’ really quick and comes up with neat, practical solutions that work. I’m sure when I finally meet John I’ll spot all sorts of other qualities, but these three seem fairly crucial, from the client side. (Oh, and he’s generous too!).
We’ve really enjoyed working with Agents of Good on many different projects over the last few years. They listen to our needs and deliver creative, interesting, budget-friendly ideas that blend perfectly with Interval House’s mission and direction. The Agents really took the time to understand who we are as an organization, who our donors and volunteers are, and what direction we’re headed in, and I think this is the reason why the projects we’ve worked on have been so successful. They’re genuinely passionate and enthusiastic fundraisers and are equally dedicated to giving organizations the tools they need to manage projects on their own (helping us keep costs down!).

I first brought the Agents of Good on board to write and design a new acquisition direct mail package. This package performed extremely well for Second Harvest, and has since become our control package for all subsequent acquisition mailings. The Agents of Good are now our chief strategic advisors, designers, and copywriters for our integrated direct response program, and their work consistently performs at a high level, both in terms of response rate and revenue raised. The Agents consistently challenge the development team to push our boundaries, test our theories, and confront our preconceived notions about what donors want. On the digital front, the Agents have redesigned our website and are working with Second Harvest to integrate direct mail, email and online channels to create a fully integrated direct response program.
