The “Godfather of Good” Joins the Agents of Good
Today, I become officially part of the AOG team and I am thrilled. Getting to work (again!) with my daughter is a dream come true and working with Agents John, Dan, Gwen, Holly, Mark, Rachel and Veronica will make me a better fundraiser.
I join the agents to help them champion donors. The most important thing I have learned in 44 years of raising money is that it’s all about the donor.
Being a passionate, mission-obsessed environmentalist – which I still am – it was hard for me to learn this basic truth. But I finally learned it and when Agent Gwen and I put the donor first at WWF from 1992 to 1999, we doubled our revenue – TWICE.
In just 8 years, we went from $3 to $6 million and then from $6 to $13 million. We quadrupled our conservation action because we put donors first.
Or in the godfather’s words, we made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.
But what does does this really mean? How do the agents put donors first?
We treat donors as individuals.
We treat donors with respect.
We send donors things worth reading. Things which lift their spirits and inspire their souls.
We put donors at the centre of all we do.
I can’t wait to do this with my fellow agents. And I’m grateful they have allowed me to say a few words in this precious space. And I may say more occasionally.
But I want my introduction to be short and sweet. My dad taught me long ago that you get one chance to make a first impression.
So hello there fellow Agents.
And yes, every one of you reading this is an Agent of Good. Working to make our world a better place by inspiring donors. I look forward to sharing thoughts with you and to learning from you.
